Over the summer, southern California was graced with multiple consecutive shark sightings! According to the KTLA 5 news website, Great Whites are using SoCal waters as a "nursery of sorts," swimming around Santa Monica Bay, Dana Point, and Ventura (Moreno, 13). Researchers are considering why juvenile sharks keep coming back to these areas. Could it be due to the shallow waters and easy access to prey? Could it be that the waters are calmer than the choppy open ocean, making learning to hunt easier for young sharks? Maybe they are just curious, and want to see what all the splashing is about. They are too young to know the danger that humans bring to the ocean, and have strong predator instincts that motivate them to investigate any unusual patterns in the water, such as swimmers splashing, in hopes that they'll be led to lunch! Share your thoughts, and keep an eye out for these shark babies!
